The final shot of our film

The final shot of our opening will be an extreme close up shot of my face. This shot will focus very carefully on my eyes as my character wakes up upon realising there is an intruder in his home, which is right before the screen suddenly fades to black. We had used this type of angle in particularly becuase we were able to make the very quick movement of my eyes widening very quickly match with the our digetic sound. The fast paced soundtrack that was playing over the coarse of the thriller had concluded with a sudden loud non digetic 'boom' which is what we had used to play over the shot of my eyes opening so that both thrilling codes could be in sync with each other.
The use of these two could are effectively used together because, they both help to 'thrill' our audience by immediately surprising them with the sudden loud sound and the quick movement when they are least expecting it.
In addition this camera shot helps to build suspense as it causes our thriller opening to be left on cliffhanger. This is shown by as when the man wakes up , he is now aware that there is another person in his house which therefore implies that there will be a confronation in-between these two men and that this man is now in danger.
Here is an example of how the same extreme close up shot technique is used to create tension in the 1990 film Sepultado Vido

The sound that we had used in our film

In our film we had used this sound instrumental in order to help convey the feeling of  thrilling excitement to our audience during the action sequence in the film as the agent is preforming his task by leaping over the wall and breaking into the house. We had used the first 50 seconds of this instrumental in our opening because that section was the most exhilarating part of the this soundtrack and if we had used the whole 2 minutes and 31 seconds of this sound it would've just dragged on and  parts of the opening wouldn't match with that sound that was being played which would've made this sound come off as Asynchronous.
We had discovered this soundtrack on Youtube while searching for a type of loud, exciting and fast pasted sound so that we could use it as a digetic synchronous sound that would be used to build excitment as well as suspense in this opening.
We had chosen this type of fast paced sound with an extremely quick rhythm to be played over our thriller because the violin string and the drum instruments that are used in this music help to convey the theme of excitment to the audience during the Spy's action sequence in the opening. This music was also edited by Cameron so that the pace of the music would gradually build up and become faster as the opening progresses in order to represent the intensity of the thriller's atmosphere gradually building and therefore becoming more suspenseful.

Thriller film research

The image above is the Questionnaire that my group had used to survey a group of young people that are aged 15+ to ask them what kind of film genre they like, what kind of Thriller sub genre appeals to them the most and finally what aspects of a Thriller that they enjoy the most. We carried this out so that we would have an idea what our target audience would want from our film so that we would know to include in our thriller and to ensure that it appeals to our target audience.

In our research we had found out that the majority of our target audience would find a Thriller film that uses suspense as its main thriller element to be a significantly good thriller, meaning that for our film to be appealing to our audience it would be wise for us to incorporate suspense into it.
In our research we had found out that the majority of our target audience would appeal the most to the sub genre of the Spy thriller .We had also discovered that our audience would find the sub genres of a Drama, Psychological and Erotic thriller to be less favourable amongst our target audience.
As a result of this we have chosen to make our film a Spy thriller, since it will be the sub genre that will be the most well received by its audience.
This pie chart shows that our audience would prefer to have both 'Suspenseful' and 'Fast paced' music to be included in a Thriller film. Based on these results we have chosen to included a film score with a very suspense and up beat digetic music track

My Media Group

My Group consists of 4 members

  • Cameron Saul-Editor,Camera operator

Cameron has the most productive jobs out of all of us in our group. In the process of constructing this product he has the very important job of filming all of the scenes that me, Tyrell and any other actors(if any) will act in during the process of our film times.Once we had completed our film making he had then  additionally taken on the job of the main film editor. Cameron was chosen to be the main camera man aswell as the main editor because he is very skillfull with the film making and editing seeing as though he is the one with the most camera work and editing skills out of all of us.

  • Marios Diamantides- Organisor, Main script writer
Marios will be the main organiser in our our film's production, making him somewhat of the director. While we were brainstorming the themes and idea's for our story, he was the one that thought of the most ideas and had also volunteered to write the majority of the film's script. He also thought of ways in which different types of Mis-en-scene could be represent through the codes of our thriller. In addition he organized the locations for our filming locations.

  • Tyrell Chetty Wilson-Actor, Re searcher
Tyrell will be the primary actor in our film as his role will have significantly more screen time than my character. He is playing the character of the MI6 spy. Tyrell was chosen to play this character because this role would require him to preform stunts such as sprinting and leaping which would be very suitable for Tyrell since he is the most physically active out of the four of us. He is also shown the be a very impressive actor as he has had experience acting before in the past

  • Shayne Thomas-Gordon(Me)-Actor,  ,Designor the storyboards
In our film's production I will be assigned with the job's of the secondary actor and the person who drew up the Storyboards. I was chosen to draw up the storyboards since I am considered as the most artistic  in our group, meaning that it would only be ideal that I design the story boards because I am able to draw a creative variety of camera frames to make our film look very interesting. I will also be the secondary actor in our film, since I have also had some acting experience in the past(like Tyrell).

What we could've done to improve our product

Better organization:

  • To help reduce the chance of my group not being able to complete our filming on time, we could arranged  additional filming days after we had finished filming the majority of the film . This would have been beneficial to us as it would allow us to go over the finished product once we had looked at all the scenes and see if we had so that we could make sure we didn't miss anything out. In the unfortunate situation that we did miss anything out we would have been able to still film any unfinished footage because we would still have time.

Having a better Introduction:

  • Rather than just beginning the film with a shot of a large wealthy look house, it would have been more suitable for us to begin with an Establishing shot of a London suburban street seeing as though , is the kind of location where my thriller is taking place. In addition this shot would have been more helpful by clearing showing the audience what country and type of environment this film is being set , but it would also aid the film in presenting its Mis-en-scene of British culture, through its locations, buildings, landmarks and citizens living in the environment.
Representations of all the characters:

  • The professional social class that is represented by the Mis-en-scene of the Spy agent is clearly identifiable in the film through the use of his all black dress code, stern mannerisms and characteristics but the social class that is beginning represented by the 'Sleeping man' is not identified. This is mainly due to the fact that this character is sleeping, throughout the whole of the film which means that he is not able to express himself in any way, shape, or form. However in order to improve this product we could've still found a way to signify a social group of certain individuals who live in britain through the use of my character's coustume. For example, we could have had my character dressed in a formal buttoned shirt pyjama top in order to represent this person as being very formal and somewhat wealthy as opposed to him just sleeping in a plain white t shirt that does not convey a lot of representation.

What had went well during our filming

What had went well

  • The costumes:In my opinion I would say that that me and my group had used very appropriate costume designs for our characters, that I believe had perfectly suited them. By this I mean that we were able to represent our characters in the best way that we could by using the mis-en-scene of the attire such as the colour and style. In terms of representation I mean that the colours are used to represent the characters as  binary oppositions such as the sleeping man with the white shirt(which represents innocence) being a contrast of the man in black clothing(which connotes negativity).
  • The technical devices:Another aspect of our film that I believe we had done really well in was our use of different camera angles.Throughout our film we had made good use of our filming equipment such as our camera and our tripod so that we could include a wide variety of different camera shots by filming at angles various different perspectives and different heights. We did this so that our film would not appear as boring due to a lack of various camera shots and so that we can still keep our audience engaged in our film.
  • In addition we had also aimed to use certain camera angles so that we could connote any kind of mis en scene that was being presented through the film at the time. An example of this would be the four times my character is shown sleeping in bed throughout the opening and then an addition shot for when my eyes open is shown. As the film progresses the shots of my face gradually keep closing in which is used to represent the intensity that keeps building up in this moment as the shots keep getting closer to my face until it reaches the fifth and final shot which is an extreme close up of my eyes as they open widely.
  • The Lighting: I also feel that my group had used our editing skills very effectively to our advantage as we were able to alter the lighting of our filming locations to make the film's settings realistically appear as very dim and taking place during the night time, when in reality we had filmed the opening during the afternoon time of the day. We had made sure that the film had appeared in this way so that we could create a dark and depressing atmosphere to establish the film in, so that it can represent as well as relate to the sinister and gloomy themes of the film.
  • The film's score: Additionally , I also believe that we had include a very suitable film music score in order to help build the suspense of the thriller as it develops and reaches its climax (likewise with the camera angles). For the score of our film we had used a fast paced drum instrument track that was played over the coarse of the opening. This score begins with a Non-digetic drum based instrument sound that is played in a very fast rhythm while the the agent is running and jumping over the brick wall. This is used to help convey a sense of excitement to the audience which symbolizes  the urgency of this fast paced action sequence which involves the agent preforming dangerous feats such as hastily running towards the house and leaping over the wall.

Audience Feedback

This printscreen shows that our first ruff version of our film has been uploaded onto you tube to be viewed by  various groups of people that consist of our target audience. We did this so that we could benefit the promote our film in a way that is similar to having advanced screenings which is to allow a few certain people to see our film before hand so that they can spread the word to their friends and encourage other people to see it, that is if they find the film appealing to their film tastes.
Another reason was so that we could gain feedback on our product to see if there was anything that our audience did not find appealing so that we know to go back and correct whatever problems we made so that our film will be more successful the next time it is presented to our audience.

This screenshot shows the feedback that we have had from a few members of our audience after they have seen our film. As you can seen our film has been met with positive feedback as we have gained praise for our film and that people are interested to know what happens next in this film once the opening had ended. This shows that we have successfully used thrilling codes in our film that were able to allow our audience to become fasinated and engaged in our film

This screen shot shows that we have also used social networking sites such as Facebook in order to advertise and present our film to our friends which are people who are around the same age group as us and therefore people who consist of our primary target audience. As you can see our film has been positively recieved by our target audience which is shown as a group of our friends have liked our film, and with another one of our friends praising us on our construction of the film as well as the finished product of it.

Filming schedule

First day of Filming: Saturday 24th of March
Filming locations: An allyway in Edmonton which we used to shoot the
Agent's running sequence. We used the back garden of Mario's house as a setting to film the scene which involve's the Agent jumping into the Protagonist's back garden and then proceeds to pick the house's back door so that the Agent can enter the house.
Location stills:The scenes that were filmed in these locations where the sections of this opening that all took place in the exterior part of our films setting. These locations are also the scenes that only include the spy agent character.
This is a still of the location of where we had filmed the sequence which includes Tyrell's character sprinting across the ally way. We had filmed in this setting while it was in the afternoon time when it was approximately around 5pm. We had done this so that our film could have a good natural lighting provided by the weather so that we could alter it later during the editing process and make the lighting appear as being very dark and dimly lit.

This is the setting right outside Mario's house. We had used this setting so that we could film the scene which involved Tyrell's character leaping over the backgarden wall. This wall was one of our major props during our filming as it was one of the major obstacles that spy had to work around by expertly jumping over it in order to infiltrate the home. As this wall was very high and would be very dangerous for Tyrell to leap over, we had used the 'Match on action' filming technique in order to film this scene by filming Tyrell running up to the wall and then having the next scene begin with Tyrell landing down on the floor. This would add the effect that Tyrell had realistically leaped over the wall and landed on the other side safely.

This is the backgarden door of Mario's house. This location was used to mark the space where Tyrell's character lands after he has preformed his jump.

This is close up shot of the door handle and the lock of Mario's back garden door. This located was used to shot the scene that involve Tyrell's character using his spy equipment in order picking the lock and enter the house. We had used a close up angle for this scene because we had wanted to this scene to have alot of focus on the agent, his equipment and the lock as he his unlocking the door.

Costumes: One this day we had only filmed the scenes that only had the character of the Agent in them , so on this day we only had to take the Agent's costume into consideration. The mysterious agent was played by Tyrell. Tyrell's agent costume had consisted of an all black attire( this was done in order to represent his mysterious character), which included a black jacket, a pair of black combat trousers, a pair of black trainer with white stripes ,a black hat and a pair of black sunglasses.

Props: One this day we had used  a large 6ft brick wall which was behind of Mario's home , during our filming as a prop for Tyrell's character to use to our advantage. We did this by having Tyrell run up to the wall a leap up to the top of the wall, while lifting one of his legs in the process. We then filmed Tyrell jumping into the centre of  the camera's frame while he is on the other side of the same wall. We did this so that once those two scenes are played in a sequence , it will appear as though Tyrell actually leaped over the very high wall and landed on the other side in a very safe position to show that this character is very precatious and has thought well about how he would infiltrate this house . We had wanted to avoid Tyrell actually jumping over the wall because we knew  it would be quite dangerous for him to preform a stunt like that over such a high wall and if he attempted it , he could have been seriously injured.
We  had also used a pair of tweezers , that Tyrell could use in order to pick the lock of the house's garden door.

What we had filmed: Today we had completed filming the all of the film sequences which involves takes place in the exteior filming locations .These scenes involved the character of the Spy sprinting along the ally way behind Marios' house and also him leaping over Marios' Back garden wall. We had then shot the scene in which the agent lands in the 'Sleeping man's garden( who is played by myself) and then had filmed a close up of the Spy using spy pick locking equipment to breaking into the other man's house.

Second day of Filming:Sunday 25th of March
Filming location:
On this day of filming we had used the interior of my house in order to film the scenes which featured both Tyrell's and my character inside the sleeping man's home. We had used the kitchen and the living room in the downstairs section of my home to shoot the sequences which involved Tyrell's character entering the house and then working at the laptop in the living room.

Location stills: The scenes that were filmed in the interior locations  of this opening. These scenes where all filmed in side of my house.

This is location is the kitchen in my house which was used film the scene that involves the agent just after he has entered the house and while he is walking down the pathway towards the house's living room.

This is a still shows the location of my home's living room. This is the setting that we had used to film the scene where Tyrell's characer uses the props of the table and a laptop.

For the scenes that had involved my character, we had used my bedroom, which is located in the upper section of my home. We had only need my bedroom to film the scenes that consisted of my character because the character that I played is asleep in his bed throughout the majority of the film until he wakes up at the end. This meant we would not need to change the location to focus on this character since I would not have moved.

  Costumes:
Tyrell's character

  • Black sunglasses(hides the spy's face, makes him appear as mysterious)
  • Black beanie hat
  • Black combat trousers
  • Black Jacket(symbolizes negativity and mysteriousness)
  • Black Trainers

Costumes:My character

  • White T-Shirt(symbolizes innocence and purity)
  • The White T-Shirt is also a contrast of the Spy's dress code, which shows how we have influenced these two characters by the Narrative structure which was developed by Claude Levi-Strauss since   these two characters are shown as being binary opposites due to the contrasting  colours of their attires.
  • Black trousers(off-screen, under the bed covers)

Props:
  • A Laptop
  • A small wooden table
  • A CD disc which we used for the Spy disc that is owned by the Spy
  • Red chair that the spy sits on( which is used to connote danger)

First day of Film editing: Monday 26th of March

Second day of Film editing: Tuesday 27th of March

Evaluation questions

Question 1 How have we used, developed or challenged thriller conventions in our film

In our film one of the main character's is a secret agent(possibly an intelligence officer like a member of the M.I.6) who is dressed in all black as he kneels down in and touches his spy glasses in order to receive information from his spy glasses. The Agent is dressed in all black, which includes a black hat high tech sunglasses which covers his face. The Mis-en-scene of this character's black attire is that it connotes that this man is very mysterious and discrete since this character is completely silent and his face is bare visible because of his glasses and hat. This shows that we are developing on the conventions of the characteristics of Spies in thrillers as agent  characters in thriller films are depicted as being dressed in all black and while very being silent which is what they do so that they are able to discretely blend into their surroundings so that they can carry out their missions unnoticeably and without interferacnce .
However the use of the black could give the impression that this charater is very antagonistic and has bad intentions for the other character as black is also asscioted with negativity.

This is our opening's final shot which features the sleeping man upstairs. This includes an extreme close up of the  man's eyes as they immediately open widely , because he was awoken by the sound of the Agent's disc hitting the floor downstairs. The reason we have an extreme close up of the man's eyes as they open is because this it reflects the intensity of this moment and also implies that there is going to be confrontation inbetween these two characters.
This conclusion to our opening is also very effective in terms of thrilling our audience, because it ends on a cliff hanger which means that the audience will be ambiguous as to what will happen to the two characters now that the sleeping man is awake and aware that there is an intruder in his home, which shows that they are now both in danger due to each other's presence.

The shows the Agent holding an unidentified CD disc which he has just taken out of his inner breast pocket and is about to place into a laptop with the intention of either downloading information from it or placing something onto the laptop.
This shot shows that we are including spy fiction elements in our film, such as confidential documents or secret military sevrice information which is implied to be stored either on the CD or the laptop. By introducing this CD , the audience will most likely is assume that it is assoicated  with advanced technology or confidentital governmant data meaning that this person could possibly be stealing top secret information and the Mis-en-scene of his black attrie helps to provoke the assumption that he is breaking in this house so that he can  steal something from the laptopor carry out some kind of  illegal activity.

This still is the Establishing shot of the film. It features the main setting for our film which is a large, wealthy looking brown on a British suburban road. The house is also surrounded by many shadows and this shot has very dim lighting. This because the films current time is very late during in the night and the time and date of when this is taking place can be seen in the form of a 24 hour clock on the left hand corner of  the screen.
This shot is an effective way of establishing our film because it gives the audience an immediate first impression about what this film is about and what will be included in it. The introduction of this big white house covered by many shadows and darkness , shows the Mis-En-Scene of mysteriousness and danger. In addition the fact that this house is covered by shadows could show that there will be danger arriving soon , that will take place inside or near this home , which will therefore cause this film's current state of Equilibrium to change to Disequilibrium in which the film will be faced with a dilemma.

This is an example of dimly lit lighting in the thriller film Distrubia:

This still is a shot which was filmed from the agent's P.O.V as he is approaching the house. To the audience , the agent appears to be perceiving his surroundings through green light in the night time as still shows the the environment around the agent through two green lit eye holes.
It is at this point where the audience realises that this character is using sunglasses that are made out of some kind of advanced technology so that he can view everything around him in night vision in order for him to perform his mission, while it is currently taking place in the night time.
This shot shows that we are again developing the conventions of the Spy thriller sub genre by having this agent possess this kind of advanced technology , in order of him to use during his spy mission. It also shows that we have put much thought into making this character a very obvious stereotype of a spy character as possible, by having him being dressed in all black, very silent and having advanced technology in his arsenal. However we are also challenging the conventions of a British spy by allowing this character to have access to advanced technology, which is uncommonly used in British Intelligence agencies like  MI6, but is most often used in american spy thrillers such as Mission impossible and Enemy of the State.
Therefore by challenging this conventing we have created a converged stereotype of a spy agent,by having this person carry out his missions in Britain , while also having him use technology that would only be able to be obtained by a spy organisation that is based in the U.S.

Question 2

This still is a shot of our film's S.I.S spy agent, while he is in a crouched position and touches his spy glasses so that he can receive information from them.
This character is shown to be dressed in a full black attire, wearing black night vision glasses that are to designed to appear as normal sunglasses. This person in addition has a neatly shaven goatee and has a very stern and emotionless expression on his face.
We are using this character to represent the social group of individuals who are identified as belonging to the 'A: Upper middle class' status category in terms of the Income bracket. This social group consists of people who have considerably professional occupations that provide very high wages and also require the employee to have some form of advanced education( e.g.a graduate's degree).
This spy can be seen as a way of signifying this status category, since he is shown to have a profession which is seen as being Top management, such as his involvement with the S.I.S, which is a British Intelligence agency that provides the British government with information regarding military operations, national security and many other government related issues.

This still is a shot of the fictional spy George Smiley who is the protagonist of the 2011 spy thriller film Tinker,Taylor,Soldier,Spy.He is portrayed by the British actor Gary Oldman. This character is a British veteran spy who had worked for the M.I.6(which is called the Circus in the film) during the year,1973 in order to preform an espionage mission to track down a Soviet double agent who is undercover as an employee of 'the Circus'.
I myself have not seen the full film of Tinker,Taylor,Soldier,Spy but I have discovered many interesting facts about this character in particular from the film's trailers, film reviews, film websites, and featurrettes based on this character as his interpretation of a spy has intrigued me as it similar to our own interpretation of a spy, while also being unique in comparaison to other spies.
From what I have learnt this character is described as being a man in his 40's with silver hair and is very formally dressed as he is often seen wearing his glasses with either a suit or a trench coat. He's characteristics are described as being very calm, and easy going. In addition he a skill full spy who is very discrete and said masterful in the spy method of integration as he is believed to have a ability for getting people to interact with him the way he wants, so that they  tell Smiley exactly what he needs to know.
However Smiley's espionage methods differentiate from the most common conventions of spying methods of other spies. Unlike the more well known famous american spies such as James Bond and Ethan Hunt(Mission Impossible) who both use a combination of their own intelligence along with their physical strength and hand to hand combat skills in their missions, Smiley heavily relies on his conversations skills such as his ability to make people talk to him and his digression.
I chose to compare the intelligence officer in my film to the character of George Smiley because they both share very similar spy characteristics. Both of these agents are depicted as being employees of the same British SIS intelligence agency in two different time periods, with Smiley being active during the 70's and our agent being active during the present day. In addition there are both shown to carry out their espionage missions in a very discrete and silent manner.

This is a shot of a real life MI6 agent Gareth Willliams who was in the news recently. It is very difficult and uncommon for MI6 to be appear in news stories because the MI6 is a secret service organization that carry out there jobs in a very discrete manner without being seen by the general public. However this agent has now become famous because he has recently been killed

Representation of other social groups...

Gender: Our film only includes representations of Males, seeing as though our thriller consists of only male characters.Throughout our film the representations of Males that are conveyed through our characters can be seen as being stereo typical since we show the character of the Spy being very physically active and wearing all black, which implies that he is a very negative and antagonistic character as his clothes are remiscent of what a stereotypically robber would wear(all black attire).Black attrie is also commonly worn by young british black males who are members of gangs and steal other peoples belongings. However the character of the person sleeping is also shown to be a black male , but he appears to be dressed in white. This could be used to show that he is the counter opposite of the spy which would make imply that his character is a decent and mild mannered the victim of this crime if the Spy is a thief.

Class representation: We had established our characters as belong to upper middle class social groups which would make them belong to the classes A or B of the income bracket. Our reason for these social classes in particular is because of the professional jobs they own such as the Spy's involvement with the MI6  organization. The sleeping man would also be shown as being of high status because he possesses advanced secret information that the spy wants to obtain, which could mean that he is equally as professional as the spy or possibly even more professional as he already has something that the agent does not. By doing this we are showing that we are challenging the stereotypical idea of black male as they are most commonly seen as working class or lower working class in various other media(e.g the film Adulthood).

Question 3.I would choose to have my film distributed by  Film Four productions.
Film Four is an independent , British media institution. It also owns horizontal integration which means that they produce and distribute their own films, through their production company Film Four productions. They can also exhibit their films through their terrestrial television channel Film Four but this would only be allowed after it has been at least two or three since the film had its own commercial release.
It is a production company that is owned by the British television broadcaster Channel 4which itself is operated by the Channel four television corporations.
Film Four is also shown to be very creative and diverse, since they have distributed many kinds of film genres in the past that range from biopic dramas, comedies, romantic comedies and crime dramas. The there main genres that Film four produces are comedies (East is East, This is England, Shaun of the Dead etc),  Biopics/Dramas ( Nowhere Boy,127 hours etc) and Romance films(e.g Slumdog millionaire) .
The majority of films that Film four has produced is often well received by critics and audiences, and have also been nominated and won numerous film accolades. The Film four comedy films such as ‘East is East’ and ‘Four lions’ are both BAFTA winners. Biographical films produced by Film Four such as ‘127 hours’, ‘Elizabeth’ and ‘The Madness of King George’ gained numerous academy award nominations for their acclaimed audience and critic responses. The films ‘The Iron Lady’, ‘The Last king of Scotland’ and ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ have all one academy awards in multiple award categories with the latter film receiving the academy award for best film of 2008 along with seven others.
My reasons for choosing Film Four as my film distributor is that many of their aims apply to what I would need for my film. Film Four often aims to support people who are beginners in the film industry, by helping to develop new talent , such as the actors and the film-makers. This would apply to my film because I would be an aspirational beginner in the film industry and it would be very beneficial to me if I were to have any kind of additional film making support in terms of film making advice, investments or encouragement.
They also plan to invest a quarter of a million pounds for each of the planned 20 films that would be distributed by Film Four productions each year. This would mean that my film's fundings would have an additional investment of £250,000.

Question 4.The target audience for my film is people that are aged from teenagers to young adults. This is because is because my film will have a certificate of a 15+ rating. The reason why my thriller film has 15+ certificate is because that the codes of a thriller, such as its mysterious and suspenseful, and sometimes violent themes would appeal to young people the most. Additionally those themes would only apply to young people as they would be considered as unsuitable for young children and people belonging to an older audience would be interested in films that are more formal and sophisticated due to their respective ages.
In terms of identifying my target audience in by using the status classification, I would say that my film's target audience comes under the category of  Class E.
Class E refers to people who have either very little or no level of income at all. This category addresses to people who are unoccupied, students, causal workers and pensioners(although this film would not apply to this age group). This is my main target audience as it includes teens such as secondary school or college students as well as young people who work average working class jobs. These people are my primary audience.
In terms of the 'Life Matrix' class system, I would say that my film's audience falls under the category of 'Tribe wired'. This consists of an audience of young people that are familiar with the most recent technology that is being used nowadays(for instance the latest smart phones). This would be good for my film because this audience would be drawn to the elements of spy fiction that my film would contain, such as the advanced MI6 technology that the agent will use in his mission (i.e his night vision glasses, with a built in wireless communicator).
The people in my target audince could also apply to the LifeMatrix category called 'Fun Attics'. These are young people who are very energetic and have ambitious goals that they aim to achieve in their professional lives. In addition because my film belongs to the Thriller genre, my film would be very appropriate for the people that make up this category ,as they are described as being very thrill seeking, which would most definitely appeal to these audience's tastes.
Our intended target audience, that would predominately be made up of teens and young men, would also be drawn to the theme of espionage in the film , such as the character of the agent and his spy mission. This character in particular would be a good selling point for this film to use, as he is like to have an interesting storyline because of his profession. As he is a MI6 agent his role in the film would involve him using various fascinating spy equipment and preforming extremely dangerous and action packed espionage missions, that would surely appeal to a young male audience.

Question 5:The technical devices that we used to engage our audience
  • Our film begins with an establishing shot of a large, white suburbian house very late at night time with a 24 hour clock appearing at the bottom left hand corner to show the date and time. The camera then suddenly zooms in to show a man sleeping in his bedroom. This shot is used to set the film in place and establish this as it's introduction location .Additionally this angle is also used to suggest to the audience that this particular setting will be the location for where the catalyst of the film will take place, in which a crucial turning point will happen here, that will cause other events to occur later on in the film.
  • During the sequence where the agent is running towards the house, he briefly stops to thoroughly view his surroundings. In this shot it, appears to the audience that he is merely just looking around but then the camera turns into a P.O.V camera angle, in which shows that the agent is seeing perceiving around him green night vision. While this is happening a voice can be heard addressing the man as 'Agent Kay' and gives him instructions to where the agents target is. It is then at this point the audience will discover that this person is a Secret service agent and that he is viewing his surroundings through some kind of advanced Spy technology that is built in to his glasses which allows him to see in night vision and to receive information from his spy colleagues .
  • Throughout this opening, there are four times the audience will see the sleeping man in his bedroom upstairs. The first time will be a mid shot that shows his whole upper body as he sleeps, the second and third times will be a close up of the man's face, and the final shot of the man will be an extreme close up of his eyes opening widely. The use of these camera angles in this order, is to help represent the intensity that is gradually increasing in this sequence as the shots of the man get closer and closer to his face. This is until the man's eyes immediately open and the suspense of this scene concludes with a sudden quick movement by the man's eyes which will also be used to surprise the audience as  they would not have been expecting this to happen so suddenly. In addition the audience would be thrilled even further by the fact that the sleeping man is now awake because of the other man's presence and now there may be be a confrontation in-between the two men.
  • In the section where the agent is picking the back garden lock , a close up of this man with his lock picking equipment  is shown  as he is unlocking the door. However despite the fact this angle is a close up , this man's face is still very unclear and very unidentifiable. This is because he has a hat on his head and his glasses are covering his face which is keeping it hidden, while this agent is outside in the darkness. We deliberately had made sure this this man's face was very unclear to be see so that he remains dark and mysterious to the audience.
  • The shot which involves the agent typing at the laptop was filmed as a high angle, over the shoulder shot with the agent looking down at the laptop. This angle was used to show that the agent is now in control , since he now has access to the sleeping man's computer and is able to do with it whatever he pleases.
  • When the audience is first introduced to the sleeping man, they can clearly see that there is a bandage on his left eyebrow. This denotation can be used to signify that this man had previously been in a accident or had a fight before this film begun. This man's injury could've also been deliberately inflicted upon him by an enemy that he could possibly have. All of these theories is good for our thriller as it helps to create suspicion about this characters back story among the the viewers , therefore making them curious and interested in this character.
  • The location for this opening is filmed completely in a dimly lit lighting. This includes the darkness of the night time which is shown outside as well as the dark lighting that is visible inside inside the house, because the lights are turned off. The use of this dark lighting is to create a very dark and depressing atmosphere for this thriller. In addition this also represents the kind of emotional mood that this film will be in,which is shown to be very negative to the audience.
Question 6:
The technology that we had used in this product was supplied by our school's media department and had consisted of a digital camera to shoot the film, a charger to re charge the camera's battery and a Tripod. The tripod is very helpful in terms of film shooting as it  holds the camera firmly in place while it is filming different heights and angles. It also allows  the camera to be perfectly balanced in order reduce the chances of the camera being shaky and keep the footage stable.
However, when our film shooting time was almost done our digital camera had unfortunately ran out of battery. To make matters worse our charger was no longer available to us at the time, because we had to give it back so that another group could use it.
As a last resort, my group was forced to use the camera one of our member's (Cameron Saul) iPhone4, to shoot the rest of the film , within the time period of just three days.
Luckily , the camera on Cameron's iPhone was able to work just as well as the digital camera did because of the technology that the phone uses, such as its 5 mega pixel camera that can record 30 film footage frames per second in HD.
To our advantage we had managed to use the iPhone with the tripod in the same way as we did with the school's camera, by placing it on the tripod's camera platform so that it can be steadily attached to the top and use the handle on the side of the platform to pan the camera in different directions and also tilt it up and down to get both high and low angle shots. The legs on the tripod were also capable of extending to about roughly 6 feet tall , which meant that we were able film shots at different heights. We had found this feature on the tripod to be very beneficial when we were filming our high angle shots, since it had enabled us to use the platform handle to tilt the camera downwards from a very tall height, but still safely hold the camera precisely framed and steady. We had also used this method of filming from tall heights in order to shot the agent's P.O.V shots. We had did this by extending the legs of the tripod until they matched Tyrell's height and the camera platform was levelled with his eyes line.We had made sure that the camera was perfectly matched so that it the angle would legitimately appear as though it was coming from the agent's perspective and then use the camera platform handle to pan the camera left and right in order to add the effect that the agent is turning his head left and right.
We had found this high angle filming method to be very successful as the P.O.V shot appeared very realistic whereas if we filmed this shot by panning the camera left and right by using nothing but our hands with no other kind of additional camera platform, the shot would've came out as being very un realistic and unstable because the shot would've had no stable support.

Question 7:
Over the course of this project, I would say that me and the people in my group have had time to greatly develop on our filming skill, since we had started with the preliminary task.
In terms of how well we had incorporated  technical devices such as the camera angles into our preliminary task, I had felt that we had managed to include a few good amount of filming techniques it such as the 180 degree rule which had turned out to be very effective as we filmed the two character's conversation as it helped to retain the task continuity as well as it's realism.
However I did also feel that the amount  of camera angles we had used were quite limited and that the lack of  a wider variety of camera angles made the final product appear as quite basic.
What I felt we did really well in the preliminary task

  • We had managed to include a 'Match on Action' camera technique during the sequence when Marios is walking towards the school yard bench. The first camera match begins with a wide shot of Marios opening the school door to the school yard and walking three steps towards his left. The first camera angle then switches to a different angle. In order to keep the task's film continuity accurate, the second match then begins from left side of the school yard, with Marios taking his fourth step to keep the continuity.
  • There is a two shot of both me and Marios from the side of the bench, as we both shake hands and he then sits down on the other side of the bench.
  • For the our conversation sequence, we had repeatedly used the Over the shoulder camera shot technique. Throught the whole of these two character's conversation, the camera is constantly crossing over the 180 line which is the imaginary line inbetween the two charcters. This was so that we could film the characters interacting and reacting to each other through reverse angle shots while they both take turns speaking. The 180 degree rule was used so that both me and both knew where to move and react if either one of us was to act a certain way,(for instance if I was to be sitting down near the left side of the bench ,Marios would have to looking in the right direction to see me in a straight direction.
What we could've done to improve our Preliminary task

  • We could have had inserted an Establishing shot of where ever this is taking place rather than just starting it in a location that is completely ambiguous to the audience.
  • We could've used close up shots for the things for the things that would've been an important part of this task drawn in alot of attention from the audience, such as a close up of the bag as Marios is passing it to me, Close ups on both mine and Marios faces to show our emotions while we are talking. We could've also gradually closed in on our faces during the conversation the represent the conversation reaching its most important turning point , which is the exchanging of the bag and its ambiguous contents.
  • We could've  introduced Marios' character by using a close up or a mid shot rather than a long shot so that the audience could have a better and more detailed look at him as they are seeing him for the first time. In addition this can be a way to show that this character is of great importance by the camera being closed in on him during his introduction which makes the audience focus on him and then included a wide shot to be able to properly get a good view of the surroundings.
  • Once we had watched this video a good number of times, we also had found the camera angles that we had filmmed to be quite shakey and unstable since the camera was not in staedy positioning and were just using our hands to hold the camera. However this was due to the fact that we had only begun filming for the first time and we were only able to use the camera's on our phones to film this task with no other filming equipment meaning that it would ve been likley for us to make mistakes in our filming.

Thrilling music that I suggested using in our film

This song uses string instruments to build intensity as the song progresses until it finally reaches its climax. This is would be most likely used at the halfway through tour thriller all the way until the end of our film, to show how more intense the film is becoming and to thrill our audience by the end as our film will be left on a suspenseful cliff hanger.

My groups finalised Thriller Idea

Over the past few weeks that my group has be given for developing our films ideas, we had unfortunately found ourselves constantly re writing our film's story due to the fact that we had found that our ideas were either not thrilling enough, didn't have enough time to film , and they would have also been required to be shot in locations that were unavailable to us at the time of our filming.
We also found it quite difficult to pick of the sub genre that our film would belong to since many of our ideas had belonged to a variety of different sub genres including conspiracy thriller, supernatural thriller, crime thriller and horror thriller and we were relatively unsure as to which main theme we should use due to the requirements that each genre would involve us including in them. In addition we also had trouble with the script writing for each of our ideas but this was probably because of the fact that we had not done this before.
With all these facts in mind , we had ultimately decided to base our film off of our original idea that we had made when we first began pitching our plot ideas to each other , when the time for our project assignment first began.
Our original film idea belonged to the Spy thriller sub genre and began with a man in his house, sleeping in his bed room as another anonymous man dressed in all black is attempting to infiltrate the sleeping man's house. At night time the man in black sprints along the path of a long ally way , until he stops , to listen to information that he receiving from his hi tech spy sunglasses telling him to approach one of the houses on his left with a brick wall fence.
The man in black then sprints towards the brick wall and leaps over it , which lands him in the sleeping man's back garden. The screen then cuts to the sleeping man. Meanwhile , the man in black walks up to the houses back door and successfully picks its lock which allows him to enter the house. The screen then cuts back to the sleeping man although this time the camera has gotten in closer on his face.
Downstairs the man in black walks through the houses kitchen which then leads him to the house's living room. He then sees a laptop on a small desk  with a red chair next to it. The man in black sits down on the red chair and then pulls out a CD disk from his inner breast pocket which he then inserts into the laptop. The man then starts typing on the laptop and begins to download information  from the laptop onto the disk.
Once the downloading had completed the man in black then takes out the disk , but it drops from out of his hand and falls to the floor. The camera then cuts to the sleeping man upstairs as he hears the disk as it hits the ground and the camera is closed in on his eyes as they open widely. The screen then fades to black as the title: HARD COPY  is shown on screen.

The Thriller Genre

In order for a film to belong to the 'Thriller' film genre, the film would be required to  use a variety of specific  film Codes in order to create the gripping mood for a film as well as using the elements of intensity, mystery and suspense for the sole purpose of 'thrilling' the film's audience.

The thrilling codes that are commonly used in a Thriller film in order to increase the anxiety and anticipation of the film's audience are ,scenes of violences, sinister themes such as murder, horror elements, filming techniques such as sinister, ominous digetic sound, dimly lit lighting, fast paced scenes, P.O.V shots, slow panning camera movement etc.

These are important to be used during the making of the film as if  Thriller film did not use a fair amount of thrilling techniques , it's final product would come off as being boring and very subtle, therefore the film, would have failed as a Thriller.

The formula of a common Thriller would involve the film's protagonist being unwilling placed into the film's dilemma which that is very life threatening to the protagonist, a loved one of the protagonist or a large number of people. In this genre the most common dilemmas that a protagonist would need to overcome would most often be found in the sub genre 'Crime Thriller' in which  the protagonist would  be established as a normal working class person who would later be be inadvertently caught up in a type of crime or conspiracy caused by the films antagonist. Later on in the film the protagonist will then be set up against a series of thrilling, life threating and suspencefull predicaments devised by the antagonist because they have discovered something that could ruin the antagonist's plans which could possibly lead to the antagonist being incarcerated as the villains schemes are most likely to be illegal.

In the cases of a few spy thrillers  the protagonist's character is established as being an ordinary person to the audience, but as the film progresses it will be revealed to the audience that the Thriller's protagonist has had a previous relationship or affliction with the antagonist or their organization .The protagonist's previous connection to the film's villain  is often set up as being ambiguous to the protagonist(due to a kind of memory loss) and to the audience so that they can then eventually discover his or her previous past. This revalation will then cause  the antagonist to target the protagonist in particular because they know information that could potentially damage the antagonist or his plans .

An example of this kind of Thriller story plot can be the 2011 conspiracy thriller 'Unknown', which stars Liam Neeson. In this film Neeson plays a working class american doctor called Martin Harris who had been caught in a car accident which had caused had him to become comatized in hospital  for four days with him suffering from memory loss as a result. Once he was discharged from the hospital he discovers that his wife claims that she does not know who he is and that she believes her husband is another man has been using his identity and also owns and ID card with Neeson character's personal information on it along with a family photo that includes the character of Harris' wife and the imposter. Throughout the course of this film Harris also encounters a group of deadly assassins that have been sent to kill him for an unknown reason. Near the climax of the film Harris then confronts the film's main antagonist who is the head of a secret organization of  assassins who was acting as a colleague of Neeson's character. The antagonist then reveals that the protagonist's alias 'Martin Harris' is a false name and that Neeson's character is in fact an assassin who is a member of the the antagonist's secret organization. It is also revealed that in the film's introduction the protagonist was attempting to carry out an assassination attempt , but could not because of the accident he had endured. It is at this point where the audience realises that the reason the protagonist cannot recall himself being a mercenary before is because of the head injury that he had sustained in the car accident that had caused him memory loss. In addition the protagonist also discovers that the characters of his wife and the imposter are also spy assassins that were his colleagues and that the reason the other man took the identity of  'Martin Harris' was so that he could carry out the protagonists failed mission in the his absence.

However the protagonist could also be established as a person who is a member of a type of law enforcement organization (such as a police officer who would be prepared to face these predicaments as they would see it as his or her duty to put an end to this problem) and would be faced with a predicament that is most often either a kidnapping, mystery or murder(or series of murders).
An example of this kind of thriller could be 1995 crime thriller film 'Se7en' which is directed by David Fincher and stars Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as two american homicide detectives that are out to catch a mystery killer who is responsible for a series of murders that all represent each of seven deadly sins (hence the film's name:Se7en).
Due to the constant re-writing  in story ideas and filiming scheduling conflicts that me and the rest of my group have been facing as we have had other commitments that we have had too, my group has unfortunatley been delayed in our filming schedule.
However since our filming deadline is approaching soon my group have all made commitment to begin filming on Friday the 22nd of March , with the following saturday and sunday beging our days for any back up or unfisished filming.
Although it is unfortunate that this filming dates our very close to our filming deadline, we feel that these filming dates should not hinder us greatly as our thriller takes place in just one setting, and that if we have everything we need on that day such as the available actors, props and good weather , we would be likely to complete filming in one day , if the filming schedule goes according to plan.

A way in which sound is used to convey suspense in The Dark Knight(action thriller)

In the infamous 'Why so Serious' scene from The Dark Knight in which the film's antagonist: the Joker holds a gangster hostage by holding a knife to his face , with the intention of cutting him, a short silence is used in the film's soundtrack as the Joker's is dialouge explaining the orgins of his scars, as if the film wanted the audience to only focus on what the Joker is saying.
As soon as the Joker reaches the dark turning point in his dialouge the the soundtrack begings to pick up film and an ominous digetic soundtrack which involves a slow building orcastrated strings sound his heard in order to build suspense , as The Joker explains  how his abusive father had slit his mouth and the suspenceful music heard in the background is used to imply that the Joker plans to inflict the same pain on the gangster.
The sound of the slow building strings then  becomes louder and more fast paced as the Joker places his knife in the gangester's mouth, which represents the inpending doom that this character is in.
The sounds continues to become more loud and up building until the camera changes from the Joker holding the knife in the gangsters mouth to another man being held hostage as the Joker asks the other man 'Why so serious' then and a quick 'Slash'sound is heard which makes the other man wince in discomfort, which suggests he has just witnessed the Joker's hostage being very graphically and violently slashed in the mouth right before the hostage's lifeless body falls to the floor.

AS Media Thriller examples

The Halfway House
This video entitled 'The Halfway House' is an example of a two and a half minute opening to a Thriller film which was made by a group of AS Media studies students posted in the year 2008. The introduction begins showing a man with a bad limp on his left leg trudging towards a house. The camera then changes to the house's basement interior in which a girl is shown tied to a chair with her mouth gagged ,while another man whose face is unseen walks around her with a long bar of wood. The camera then cuts back to the limping man entering the house through the front door and then cuts back to the tied up woman as she is being beaten to death by the man with the wood block. The camera diverts back to the limping man looking around the house's interior and then begins to explore into the house's downstairs until he comes to the room where the girl was killed. The protagonist then sees the killer from a distance kneeling over the dead girl before the killer slowly turns his head to face the protagonist. The screen then turns to black for the title sequence.

The technique that I think this Thriller used really well
  • Using suspenseful music to set the tone of the this thrilling moment as well as being used in order to establish this film as a Thriller.
  • Having the killers lair being very dimly lit with lots of shadows to represent his sinister character.
  • Not having the camera show the killer's face until the end of this opening, I think that this was very helpful to establishing the killers character as it shows him as being very mysterious , which would also make the film's audience curious to find out who he is later on in the film.
  • Having a close up shot of the bar of wood which is being held by the killer as he circles the helpless girl tied to a chair. By showing this it gives the impression to the audience that he plans to hit her with it.
  • As the killer is walking around his bounded victim, an low angle over the shoulder shot is used to make the camera  look down on the victim from the killers point of view. This is effective as it represents the killer as being in power at this moment as well as the girl being helpless.
  • As the protagonist is inside the house the suspenseful diegetic music calms down and then builds up again as the protagonist begins to go downwards into the house which becomes to appear more sinister and dark as he gets further down and becomes closer towards the killer which shows that he is travelling towards danger.
  • As the protagonist is walking down the stairs a wide angle shot from far behind him is used in order to represent him as being watched.
  • Once again the suspenseful music builds up even more as the protagonist sees the killer kneeling over the girl's corspe, which shows that he is in danger, and the killers head then slowly turns to face the protagonist, right before the opening credits begin to roll . The effect of this is that it leaves this introduction on a suspenseful cliffhanger, which would make the film's audience very curious as to what is going to happen to these two characters as their fates have been left unknown at the end of  this opening , until they are revealed later on as the film progresses.

The Grade I would give this Introduction : B

My first Thriller Idea

This post is about the very first idea of how my Thriller's story would follow. It is only based on my own personal ideas ,as I had thought up this story before I was assigned to my media group and then with my group combined all of our ideas to create one final idea. My first Media idea had belonged to to the sub- genre psychological thriller , due to it containing suspense that would have been built up in my protagonist's mind as my antagonist would've played mind game on him in order to confuse and mentally break down the protagonist.

My idea's story began with the protagonist listening to the music on his radio in his bedroom ,alone in his home while it is night time outside. A knock is heard from outside the the house's front door and the protagonist turns off his radio and leaves his room and goes downstairs to the door. He then puts his eye up against the door's peep-hole and sees that there is nothing and no one on the other side of the door apart from a row of cars parked on his neighbourhood road and the night light bathing everything outside in dimly lit orange light.

Then, suddenly a dark and very unclear figure emerges from the other side of the door, which completely blocks the peep holes view and causes the protagonist to be startled and jumps in surprisement. The dark figure then quickly turns away from the door and then runs off into the street. The protagonist then immediately gets out his keys and unlocks the door because he is very curious as to who that person was, but by the time he gets the door wide open, there is no one in sight.

The protagonist then hears music being unexpectedly activated and playing from his bedroom upstairs. Fearing that there may be someone in his room because he clearly remembers turning off his radio, the protagonist then hurriedly departs from his front door without closing it leaving the entrance wide open then proceeds to race up the stairs into his bedroom.

Once he was in the room, he searched the whole interior but found that he was the only person in there . He then takes a deep breath and  tries to calm himself down as he turns off his radio. However the expression on the protagonist's face subsequently turns to shock as he realises that he had left the front door wide open before he ran upstairs.

Afterwards this realisation the protagonist then hastily rushes downstairs to shut the doors, but once he arrives in the hallway, he finds that the front door has already been closed and  locked with the keys hanging from the keyhole.

The next shot shows a mid shot of the protagonist with his jaw dropped and his face visibly in the state of horror. The dark figure then abruptly bursts out from the living room door which is very close to the part of the hallway , where the protagonist is standing and subsequently attacks the protagonist . The screen then fades to black before the audience can get a good look of the dark figure and the screen then begins to show the opening credits .
